IMAT ranking: how it works

Every year, thousands of international and Italian students who want to study medicine in English prepare for the IMAT test.

If you are among the students who take this exam as an additional opportunity to enter medical school or if you want to study Medicine and Surgery in Italy, it will be useful for you to know how the IMAT ranking works.

How the IMAT ranking works

The procedures for registration and taking the test for medicine in English, as well as the deadlines for the ranking, are specified by the MUR in the IMAT notice published each year.

The IMAT ranking is unique and national for candidates from European Union and non-EU countries residing in Italy. On the other hand, the ranking for non-EU candidates residing abroad is drawn up by the universities based on the places reserved for this category.

The minimum score to be eligible for inclusion in the ranking is 20 points for EU and non-EU candidates residing in Italy. This threshold does not apply to non-EU candidates residing abroad, who are considered eligible if they obtain a score greater than zero, except in the case where they do not provide any answers.

How does the IMAT score work? The maximum IMAT score is 90 points, allocated as follows:

  • +1.5 points for each correct answer
  • -0.4 points for each wrong answer
  • 0 points for each unanswered question

IMAT minimum score

What is the minimum IMAT score for medicine? This is the score obtained by the last candidate in a useful position to enter the ranking for EU and non-EU equivalent.

It is not possible to predict the IMAT 2024 minimum score in advance, as it depends on the difficulty of the exam, the number of places available and the level of preparation of the other candidates.

When the IMAT ranking is released

The publication of the ranking for EU and non-EU equivalent takes place in 2 phases:

  • two weeks after the test, the anonymous IMAT ranking is published on Universitaly, which shows only the score and label code;
  • a month after the test, the IMAT nominal ranking is announced. Furthermore, a few days before, candidates can view their score, paper and personal details, always on Universitaly.

On the other hand, the ranking for non-EU residents abroad is usually published on the same day as the publication of the nominal ranking for EU, separately, based on merit and the places available on the university portal. The publication methods are specified in the university notice.

What does it mean to be booked or assigned in the ranking

Based on the score obtained, preferences expressed during registration and places available for the university, EU and non-EU equivalent candidates see the word “assigned” or “booked” next to their name:

Assigned candidates have obtained the place in their first choice. They have 4 working days, including the day of the ranking or scrolling, to enroll in the chosen university. Students who do not enroll within this deadline are excluded from the ranking;

Booked candidates are the candidates assigned not to their first choice. These candidates can choose whether to enroll in the booked university or wait for the next scrolling to try to enter the first choice location. In the latter case, they must confirm on Universitaly their interest in remaining in the ranking by 12 noon on the fifth working day after the publication of the ranking or scrolling;

Candidates who have not obtained a place in any of the locations for which they have expressed a preference are “waiting”. The situation could change during the scorrimenti, changing their status to “booked”. They must also confirm their interest in remaining in the ranking by 12 noon on the fifth working day after the publication of the ranking or scrolling.

How IMAT scrolling works

Scrolling can significantly influence the ranking. In fact, compared to the Italian test, the IMAT has a higher level of withdrawals, as many candidates consider it a second choice to have an extra opportunity in case of failure in the Italian medical test.

The first IMAT scrolling is published one week after the nominal ranking and the scorrimenti continue with the same frequency, except during the holidays.

How much does the IMAT ranking slide?

Once all the places have been assigned, the MUR communicates the closure of the ranking. The IMAT ranking is often closed within the first semester.

IMAT: what happens in case of a tie

How does the ranking work if two or more candidates get the same score? Here is what happens in case of a tie:

  • the score obtained in the following subjects is taken into account in descending order: biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics, logical reasoning and problems, general knowledge;
  • the possession of language certifications obtained by the deadline for registration takes precedence;
  • in case of a tie between one or more disabled candidates with a disability certificate equal to or greater than 66% or disabled people with a certification of law n. 104 of 1992 art. 3, paragraph 3, and one or more candidates not falling into the aforementioned categories, the disabled candidate/s with a disability certificate equal to or greater than 66% or disabled with a certification of law n. 104 of 1992 art. 3, paragraph 3;
  • only in case of further tie, the youngest candidate prevails.
