How many medical schools are there in Italy? In the 2024/25 academic year, there are 16 public Italian medical schools, in addition to the two universities that offer the dentistry program in English, Siena and La Sapienza in Rome.

Each year, Censis, a private and independent research institute founded in 1964, publishes the ranking of Italian universities both overall and by disciplinary group.

The ranking for the “Medicine and Surgery” disciplinary group is composed of an overall score and two additional rankings for the indicators “career progression” and “international relations.” 

Based on the overall score, the general ranking is as follows: 

  1. Pavia – 109.5 points (110 points for international relations)
  2. Milano-Bicocca – 100.5 points (91 points for international relations)
  3. Bologna – 98 points (92 points for international relations)
  4. Milan – 95.5 points (84 points for international relations)
  5. Padua – 92.5 points (85 points for international relations)
  6. Turin – 86 points (85 points for international relations)
  7. Parma – 86 points (84 points for international relations)
  8. Rome “La Sapienza” – 84.5 points (81 points for international relations)
  9. Messina – 84 points (84 points for international relations)
  10. Rome “Tor Vergata” – 83 points (84 points for international relations)
  11. Politecnica delle Marche – 83 points (76 points for international relations)
  12. Naples Federico II – 75 points (73 points for international relations)
  13. Catania – 73.5 points (66 points for international relations)
  14. Campania “L. Vanvitelli” – 73 points (75 points for international relations)
  15. Bari – 72 points (75 points for international relations)
  16. Cagliari – in the process of accreditation

In parentheses, we have included the score obtained by the universities for the “international relations” indicator. This indicator is very important for those who wish to study medicine in English because it measures: 

  • the outbound student mobility;
  • the foreign universities/institutions that have hosted students from the Erasmus or other programs;
  • the number of foreign students enrolled.
