The IMAT call for applications 2025 has been published. The decree outlines the procedures for the IMAT 2025, the mandatory entrance exam for admission to Medicine and Surgery in English in Italy.
Below are the details you need to know if you plan to take the exam on September 17, 2025: updates, locations, available spots, exam structure and subjects to study, registration process, cost, and all important deadlines to remember.

What will IMAT 2025 be like? The IMAT 2025 decree, D.M. 599 dated August 7th, introduce two changes compared to 2024:
- the activation of the single-cycle Master’s Degree in Veterinary Medicine taught in English. Therefore, starting from 2025, the IMAT will grant access not only to Medicine and Dentistry in English, but also to Veterinary Medicine;
- furthermore, there will be two national rankings.

IMAT 2025: date and locations
When is the IMAT test held? The date of the IMAT 2025 test is September 17th. Regarding the test time for Medicine in English, in Italian locations, the test starts at 11:00 AM, while each foreign location has its own starting time.
Where can I take the IMAT? The Italian locations for IMAT are faculties offering the English-language Medicine program, with 16 universities for Medicine, 2 for Dentistry, 1 for Veterinary, in addition to locations abroad.

IMAT 2025 seats
How many seats are available for IMAT 2025? The seats for Medicine and Surgery, Dentistry and Veterinary programs have been defined by the same Decree.
For Medicine in English in 2025 at state universities, there are 952 seats reserved for EU and non-EU candidates residing in Italy. The seats for English-language Dentistry in 2025 are 52, those for Veterinary are 45.
There are 680 seats available for non-EU candidates not equated, plus 8 for Dentistry and 5 for Veterinary.

IMAT 2025 test
The IMAT test format includes 60 multiple-choice questions in English to be answered within 100 minutes, divided as follows:
- 4 questions on Reading comprehension and Acquired knowledge
- 5 questions on Logical reasoning and Problem-solving
- 23 questions on Biology
- 15 questions on Chemistry
- 13 questions on Mathematics and Physics
Regarding scoring:
- +1.5 points for each correct answer
- 0 points for unanswered questions
- -0.4 points for each incorrect answer

IMAT 2025: registration
You can register for the IMAT from August until September 9 at 3:00 PM on Universitaly. After registering on the portal, you must indicate the test centers where you wish to take the exam in order of preference and any required language certifications.
If you take the IMAT test in Italy, your first choice will also be the location where you will sit for the exam. Choose carefully because after the registration deadline, at 3:00 PM Italian time on September 9, you will not be able to modify your preferences.
For candidates taking the test abroad, the list of test centers has been published for selection during registration.
How much does the IMAT Italy cost? The registration fee for IMAT is specified on the Universitaly portal at the time of registration.

IMAT 2025 Ranking: important dates to remember
Here are the key dates for EU and non-EU equated candidates on the IMAT 2025 ranking list:
- September 17: date of the 2025 IMAT test;
- September 25: publication of the anonymous IMAT ranking list with only the label code;
- October 6: candidates can view their own paper and score in the reserved area of Universitaly;
- October 13: the two national merit ranking lists are published on Universitaly, showing the names of students assigned or reserved for the course or location indicated as their first preference. At this point, you can proceed with enrollment or confirm your interest to wait for the next ranking, otherwise you risk exclusion;
- October 20: date of the first ranking update for IMAT 2025. After each update, you must confirm your interest or enroll at the assigned location.
For non-EU non-equated candidates, a local merit ranking list is provided.
