In total, IMAT 2025 offers 1,510 places (up from 1,465 in 2024) for EU candidates and equivalent non-EU candidates, including private universities, plus 52 for Dentistry and 45 for Veterinary Medicine. For non-EU candidates residing abroad, there are 942 places (up from 737 in 2024), plus 18 for Dentistry and 5 for Veterinary Medicine.

IMAT seats: how they work

When we refer to IMAT seats, we are talking about the number of places available for students who pass the International Medical Admissions Test, IMAT. The IMAT is a standardized test used by several public Italian universities to select students for their English-taught medical programs.

Each university allocates a specific number of seats for both international and domestic students based on their IMAT scores.

Key points about IMAT seats:

  • availability. Different universities have varying numbers of seats for their medical programs. For example, some universities might offer 50 seats for international students and 100 seats for domestic students;
  • competition. The number of IMAT seats is limited, making the admissions process highly competitive. High scores on the IMAT increase your chances of securing a spot;
  • allocation. Seats are allocated based on the ranking of the IMAT scores. The higher your score, the better your chances of being admitted to your desired university.

Medicine in English in Italy: 2025 IMAT seats

How many places are available for studying Medicine in English in Italy’s public universities? The list of medical faculties offering English-taught programs in Italy is available in Ministerial Decree 599 of August 8, 2025, regarding the number of places, which are still provisional at the moment.

Compared to 2025, there is now also a Veterinary Medicine program in English.

For IMAT 2025 (i.e., state universities) there are 952 places for EU candidates and non-EU candidates treated as equivalent (up from 919 in 2024), plus 52 places for Dentistry (up from 42 in 2024) and 45 for Veterinary Medicine.
For non-EU candidates residing abroad, there are 680 places, plus 8 for Dentistry and 5 for Veterinary Medicine.

  • Bari – 69 places for EU and equivalent non-EU, 11 places for non-EU residing abroad
  • Bologna – 130 places for EU and equivalent non-EU, 20 places for non-EU residing abroad
  • Bologna (Veterinary) – 45 places for EU and equivalent non-EU, 5 places for non-EU residing abroad
  • Cagliari – 80 places for EU and equivalent non-EU, 20 places for non-EU residing abroad
  • Campania “L. Vanvitelli” – 60 places in Naples for EU and equivalent non-EU, 50 places for non-EU residing abroad
  • Catania – 0 places for EU and equivalent non-EU, 60 places for non-EU residing abroad
  • Messina – 55 places for EU and equivalent non-EU, 56 places for non-EU residing abroad
  • Milan – 55 places for EU and equivalent non-EU, 15 places for non-EU residing abroad
  • Milan-Bicocca – 30 places in Bergamo for EU and equivalent non-EU, 18 places for non-EU residing abroad
  • Naples Federico II – 25 places for EU and equivalent non-EU, 45 places for non-EU residing abroad
  • Padua – 75 places for EU and equivalent non-EU, 25 places for non-EU residing abroad
  • Parma (Piacenza campus) – 75 places for EU and equivalent non-EU, 45 places for non-EU residing abroad
  • Pavia – 103 places for EU and equivalent non-EU, 40 places for non-EU residing abroad
  • Politecnica delle Marche (Ancona campus) – 20 places for EU and equivalent non-EU, 60 places for non-EU residing abroad
  • Rome “La Sapienza” – F – 45 places for EU and equivalent non-EU, 13 places for non-EU residing abroad
  • Rome “La Sapienza” (Dentistry) – 19 places for EU and equivalent non-EU, 6 places for non-EU residing abroad

Medical in English in Italy: seats in private Universities

As an alternative to the Medicine and Surgery degree programs offered at state universities, Italy also has several non-state institutions where it is possible to study Medicine in English.

Here is the list of private universities offering Medicine in English in 2025:

  • Cattolica del Sacro Cuore Rome – 40 places for EU and equivalent non-EU, 70 places for non-EU residing abroad
  • Cattolica del Sacro Cuore Bolzano – 50 places for EU and equivalent non-EU, 10 places for non-EU residing abroad
  • Humanitas – 230 (80 + 150) places in Pieve Emanuele for EU and equivalent non-EU, 70 (50 + 20) places for non-EU residing abroad
  • Campus Bio-Medico University of Rome – 84 places for EU and equivalent non-EU, 36 places for non-EU residing abroad
  • Campus Bio-Medico University of Rome (MedTech) – 68 places for EU and equivalent non-EU, 12 places for non-EU residing abroad
  • San Raffaele University, Milan – 86 places for EU and equivalent non-EU, 64 places for non-EU residing abroad

For 2025, private universities offer 558 places for EU and equivalent non-EU candidates (up from 546 in 2024), plus 262 places for non-EU candidates residing abroad (same as 2024).

However, these numbers should be added to the UniCamillus intake. At the Rome campus, where the Medicine program is taught in English, there are 425 places for EU and equivalent non-EU, and 225 places for non-EU residing abroad.

IMAT test 2025: how to prepare

To be able to study Medicine in English in Italy and enroll in one of the public faculties where the Medicine and Surgery degree course is active, it is necessary to pass the IMAT test.

The structure of the test for Medicine in English is not the same between public and private universities but presents some differences. For this reason, we suggest you always read carefully the call published by the universities.
